What I've Learned About Banking from the Inside
Not an Ending but a Transition
I came into banking from the outside, a builder used to moving fast and questioning why things worked the way they did. I carried a stack of assumptions with me. Most of them turned out to be wrong, or at least incomplete. Looking back at where I started and where I am now, the gap between the two is the truest measure I have of what this stretch taught me.

What I Got Wrong
The biggest one was thinking banks were simply slow. From the outside, the caution looked like inertia, a reluctance to change for its own sake. From the inside, most of it is earned. When you are holding people's money and standing on their trust, the cost of getting something wrong is not a bug report. It is real harm to real people. A lot of what I had read as slowness is discipline, and the discipline exists for good reasons.
That reframed how I see the rules and the people who write and enforce them. I used to view regulation as friction. Now I see it as part of what makes the whole arrangement trustworthy, and the regulators as partners working a genuinely hard problem with care. Change in this industry takes time because the work demands it, not because anyone is behind.
What Mattered Most
For someone who came in believing technology was the answer to most things, the hardest lesson was that it usually is not the main thing. The relationship is. The trust between a bank and the people it serves is the actual product, and technology is only worth something when it strengthens that. I have watched good technology fail because it ignored the relationship, and modest technology succeed because it served it.
AI taught me a smaller version of the same lesson. It is genuinely powerful, more than I expected in some ways, and it is not magic. It is a strong tool for the right problems and a liability in the wrong ones, and the value comes from human judgment paired with it, not from handing the judgment away. Powerful, not magic, is how I have come to put it.
What Hasn't Changed
For all the change I have watched, AI, instant payments, the rise and stumble of fintech models, the fundamentals underneath have not moved. Trust, safety, and service are exactly what they were when I walked in. If anything, the faster the technology moves, the more those constants matter, because they are what keep the whole thing from flying apart. That steadiness is the part I most underestimated at the start, and the part I now respect most.
Where It Goes
This is not really an ending. The questions I find most interesting are still open. Where AI autonomy actually settles inside a regulated institution. How the next wave of tools gets absorbed without breaking what matters. How a community bank keeps its character while it modernizes. I do not have clean answers, and that is fine. The point was never to arrive. It was to understand the place I had stepped into well enough to help carry it forward, and to keep learning out loud while I do. I am grateful for what the view from the inside has taught me, and I am not done looking.
